With the 2013 New York International Auto Show in full swing, the new Acura lineup is garnering attention like never before thanks to four new models released in the past 18 months, including one in New York.
The Acura NSX Concept is a guaranteed head-turner in the Acura booth at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. While the latest iteration of the concept was revealed in January in Detroit at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, the NSX Concept made its world debut at the same show a year prior. Since that time, the vehicle has gained popularity thanks to a Super Bowl commercial with Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno and a cameo in The Avengers as the vehicle driven by Robert Downey Jr., playing the role of Tony Stark and Iron Man. The production model is set to hit showrooms within the next 18 months.
The other Acura turning heads is the all-new 2014 MDX, which made headlines thanks to its production model debut in New York. This MDX is the third-generation of the luxury SUV and is set to hit showrooms in the summer. The MDX is already the best-selling Acura vehicle and the 2014 model boasts a wide-array of upgraded features and technologies, including a redesigned, more aerodynamic body.
Also in the Acura booth is the all-new 2014 RLX, the brand’s new flagship vehicle, which made its world debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November and hit showrooms less than a month ago. The luxurious RLX features many onboard driver-assist and convenience technologies. It also carries Acura’s new signature “Jewel Eye” LED headlights, the next generation of the AcuraLink connected-car system and a Precision All-Wheel Steer system.
The ILX sedan, which debuted as an all-new model last year, and the RDX compact crossover SUV, which debuted its second-generation model last year, are also on display in New York. The RDX has grown in popularity since its latest redesign, setting eleven straight monthly sales records. Meanwhile, the ILX has been gaining steam as well due to the level of luxury available at an entry-level price.
Rounding out the rest of the models on display at the Javits Center are the ever-popular TL sedan, the sporty TSX sedan and the crossover ZDX. The TL is the best-selling Acura sedan because of its reliability and its striking designing. Meanwhile, despite entering its final model year, the 2013 ZDX has received several new features, including a redesigned front grille, front and rear parking sensors, power folding side mirrors and safety features such as Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning.
The departure of the ZDX is part of Acura’s plan to sharpen its focus on new models and core products. Industry experts expect the luxury brand to carry a smaller lineup with only the RLX, ILX, MDX, RDX, as well as the NSX, in the next two years, with the possibility of adding an all-new midsize sedan – maybe an updated TL.
