The 911 Targa 4, unveiled by Porsche today, was created to be unmistakably unique. With this model, designers looked to remain true to the original Targa while adding new features like the flatter silhouette, clear lines and extended wheelbase for greater driving stability.
While the car maintains the elegant curves and lightness of previous models, its new roof concept is what really sets it apart. The retractable roof blends seamlessly with the classic design while enhancing the model to make it even more modern. The engineers of the 911 Targa 4 refer to this addition as a “fully automatic roof system with innovative kinematics.”
The system relies on a complex technical solution with the strength to fully and automatically open and close the roof in 20 seconds when the vehicle is stationary, tucking the roof behind the rear seat system. The materials of the roof, equally as notable as the automatic system, allow for optimum tensioning of the fabric top and minimal driving noise while the roof is up.
Under the hood, the new 911 Targa 4 has a 3.4-liter flat-six engine that develops 350 hp at 7,400 rpm. It has a maximum torque of 287 lb.-ft. available at 5,600 rpm. The car’s 7-speed manual transmission allows for acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in five seconds.
Even more impressive, the 911 Targa 4S model has a 3.8-liter flat engine, 400 hp at 7,400 rpm and a maximum torque of 325 lb.-ft. achieved at 5,600 rpm. The Porsche Active Suspension Management also creates sporty-comfortable or sporty-rigid damping along the way for the 4S (and optionally for the 4).
The Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (or PDCC) is also available as a system for active anti-roll stabilization, which improves driving dynamics, safety and comfort. The Porsche Traction Management also ensures a better ride with equal distribution between the front and rear axles.
Inside the car, the design is equally as classic and straightforward as the exterior. With a sporty feel and high-end equipment, the driver is comfortable and undistracted.
The 2014 Porsche 911 Targa 4 will be available for sale this summer.
