Having already unveiled its new flagship luxury-performance sedan, Acura brought along the 2014 RLX to the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Driving Life was there to provide a closer look of what Acura says is “the most powerful, spacious and technologically advanced Acura sedan, ever.” The 2014 Acura RLX will debut at Acura dealerships on March 15, 2013, with a starting MSRP of $48,450.
From the outside, you can see that the RLX boasts a more modern look than its predecessor, the RL. Its wide, athletic stance is accentuated by a sweeping, aerodynamic profile, which is not just for looks but also for performance. The RLX carries Acura’s new, distinctive Jewel-Eye™ LED headlights, which will become a staple of the brand. Just by looking at them, you can tell the new headlights will provide improved road illumination.
The 2014 RLX comes standard with seven-spoke, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and all-weather tires, with a 19-inch wheel option for higher-end models. The RLX’s wheels are designed to lower tire noise while driving.
On the inside, the new RLX already comes with an advantage, delivering the best rear-seat legroom (38.8 inches), longest tandem seating distance (36.4 inches) and best front and rear shoulder room in the mid-luxury class. The interior design features a stitched-leather instrument panel and a center console and steering wheel with premium metal and wood-grain accents.
The RLX’s new center console features two screens, an eight-inch navigation screen and a seven-inch touch screen for the On-Demand Multi-Use Display™, which provides easy, one-touch access to key functions: audio, air conditioning, navigation and text-to-voice SMS text messaging. The sliding, leather-trimmed armrest conceals a storage compartment with USB connectivity, a 12-volt accessory power outlet and space to store a tablet device.
A 10-speaker ELS audio system with HD radio™, XM radio, Pandora® interface, USB connectivity and an auxiliary jack comes standard. Other packages feature a 14-speaker Acura/ELS Studio premium audio system or an all-new Krell ultra-premium audio system.
The vehicle also comes with additional convenient interior features such as push-button start, power sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control and Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®.
UNDER THE HOOD
The 2014 Acura RLX sports an all-new 310-horsepower direct-injected i-VTEC® V-6 engine, which is expected to earn best-in-class estimated EPA fuel economy ratings of 20/31/24 mpg (city/highway/combined). The RLX will also boast Precision All-Wheel Steer™ (P-AWS), the world’s first technology to feature independent and continuous control of the left and right rear-wheel steering angles, which will provide excellent high- and low-speed maneuverability and improved overall handling.
TECHNOLOGY AND MORE
The new RLX will also feature the next-generation AcuraLink® connectivity system with AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic™, the Lane Keeping Assist System, the Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Warning safety systems, as well as Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow and Agile Handling Assist dynamic braking technology.
